MUSICAL BRAIN SCAN SERIES: VALENCE
Dear sixties souls, we're very thrilled to introduce you today a new Musical Brain Scan! For the first episode of 2025 we would like to introduce Valence.
From the very first notes, Valence invokes a prism of colors, adorned with flowers and poetic garlands. The indie-pop project of Vincent Dufour, originally from the city of Quebec, serves as an outlet for his passions; when Valence arrives, he delves deep into things.
It was in 2019 that the first sketches of Valence emerged with the release of the EP Cristobal Cartel, a suave offering overflowing with spacious arrangements and impressionistic lyrics that uplift the heart with velvet gloves. A year later, in the fall of 2020, the singer-songwriter was crowned with great honors at the 24th edition of the Francouvertes, leaving the prestigious showcase competition with first place among more than twenty other awards. This led to a debut full-length album, Pêle-Mêle, released in 2021 on the Chivi Chivi label. The album offers rich, dreamy, and passionate music, reflecting the exuberant chaos that punctuated the artist's twenties. It marks the resounding start of Valence's career, which won the Révélation de l'année (Revelation of the Year) award at the 2021 GAMIQ.
In March 2023, Valence returned with "Charlie," a piece in collaboration with Ariane Roy, which attests to the natural and fluid symbiosis between the two Quebec artists. This marked the beginning of a new creative cycle for Valence, now reaching its conclusion with the announcement of his second album, La nuit s'achève, set to be released on February 2, 2024. Produced by Alexandre Martel (Alex Burger, Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Thierry Larose, LUMIÈRE) and mostly recorded at Pantoum, La nuit s'achève has the breath of a concept album without strictly being one. Far from being concerned with narrative considerations, Valence offers a summa work through which he demonstrates that he has reached maturity as a singer-songwriter, now fully capable of wielding music in all the power of the medium.
